Can the Lane Community College men’s track and field team make it six titles in a row?

That will be the quest Saturday when the Titans play host to the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges Southern Region Championships at Cottage Grove High School.

“I feel pretty good about our chances,” LCC coach Grady O’Connor said. “Given our depth and top-end talent, we won’t have to load up our guys.”

The Titans, who have won this meet in each of the past five years, will compete against Clark, Mount Hood, Clackamas and Southwestern Oregon.

LCC will be led by Springfield freshman Trent Davis in the long jump (PR of 23 feet), freshman Spencer Head in the 800 (1:53.76) and 1,500 (3:59.39), sophomore Tyler Lindgren in the hammer (187-0) and sophomore Seth Lindquist in the triple jump (46-0) and high jump (6-5).

LCC is particularly deep in the pole vault with freshman Scott Elliott the Southern region leader at 16-0, followed by three other teammates. Newport sophomore Bruce Burbank returns in the long jump, triple jump, high jump and 110 hurdles after earning high-point honors last year with 36 points.

On the women’s side, O’Connor expects a tight battle between Lane and Mount Hood. The Titans have won four of the past five meets, with the Saints prevailing in 2007.

The top LCC performers include Newport sophomore Annie Hayward in the 400 (58.20), freshman Kim Wilson in the 100 (12.54) and 200 (25.90), Thurston freshman Tauni Powell in the javelin (148-5) and Rocksi Miller in the shot put (42-2).

In the middle distances, freshman Mikayla Bradbury leads the way in the 800 (2:19) and 1,500 (4:48), followed closely by Siuslaw sophomore Leah Twombly (2:22 and 4:50).

The meet begins at 10 a.m., although two events — the hammer throw and 3,000 steeplechase — will be held at LCC beginning at 9:15 a.m.
