Lane men rally from early deficit to top Umpqua
Tre Clark scores 22 points to help the Titans come back from a 14-point deficit
With Umpqua dropping outside bombs for a 14-point halftime lead, Lane rallied behind its man-to-man defense and managed to claw out a 79-76 victory in an NWAC men’s basketball game Wednesday at LCC.
The Titans took their first lead in the second half with 3 minutes remaining, and then the teams traded leads into the final minute. With Lane up by one, Jamel Merriweather hit a pair of free throws with 9 seconds remaining to give the Titans the final three-point edge.
Tre Clark finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds for Lane, and Dale Baker just missed a double-double with 20 points and nine rebounds. Jared Kelsay finished with 10 points for the Titans.
Umpqua was led by Mikko Balmes with 21 points, followed by Charles Porter with 20, and Jordan Madrid-Andrews and Titus Rice with 11 points each. The Riverhawks drilled 7-of-14 three-pointers in the first half but could muster only 2-of-8 in the second half as Lane switched from zone to man defense.
Both teams are tied for third in the NWAC South Region standings at 5-4. Lane is 13-10 overall and Umpqua is 14-9.
