Skip Spencer pitches April 26 against Clackamas. He helped lead the Titan’s to another playoff berth. The Titans wrapped up the regular season May 17 with two losses at Linn-Benton. The Titans (24-18, 19-11 Southern Region) fell in the conference finale doubleheader by scores of 11-7 and 4-3.

Fortunately for the Titans, the team secured a spot in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community College’s championship tournament the previous week..  The Titans are the No. 2 seed out of the Southern Region and will be one of eight teams vying for the NWAACC championship.

“The positive thing we can take from today is that we’re already in (playoffs). That has been the goal all along for this year and we know from experience that anything can happen in the tourney,” assistant coach Jeff Lyle said.

The first game started out rough for the Titans as they fell behind 6-0 after three innings of play.

LCC cut into that deficit by scoring twice in the top of the fourth. After a leadoff walk to sophomore Darrell Hunter, fellow sophomore Chance Cornish scored him from first with a triple to right field. Cornish would then come around to score on a sacrifice fly by freshman Elliot Sherrell.

After the Roadrunners scored two in their bottom half of the fourth, the Titans would again post two runs on the board to cut the score to 8-4.

Sophomore Matt Myrmo and Hunter hit back-to-back singles to begin the fifth and would come around to score on RBIs by sophomores Trevor Ryan and Tym Pearson.

Linn-Benton would tack on three runs in the bottom of the sixth for an 11-4 lead before LCC would add three runs of their own in the top of the eighth to final the score at 11-7.

After a single by sophomore Joe Offer, Myrmo would hit a triple and score Offer from first.  Myrmo would then come around and score on a two-out, two-run homerun by Hunter, his team-leading eighth of the year.

For the game, Hunter went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs, Myrmo went 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI, and Cornish went 2-for-5 with an RBI and run.

The nightcap started out much like the first game with the Titans trailing 3-0 after the first two innings.

LCC fought back with three runs of their own in the top of third to tie the score.

After an error and a single put Titan runners at first and second, Myrmo hit a double to right field that would score one.  After a walk was issued to Hunter, Cornish came up with two outs and the bases loaded and smacked a two-run double down the right field line.

Linn-Benton would tack on another run in their bottom half of the third and that would complete the scoring.

The Titans threatened in both the sixth and seventh innings, loading the bases with one out but couldn’t come up with a run.

For the game, sophomore Jimmy Sanchez was 2-for-4 with a run, Myrmo was 1-for-3 with an RBI and run, and Cornish was 1-for-1 with a double and two RBIs.

The Titans resume play May 26 in the NWAACC Championship Tournament.  The first pitch is set for 4:35 p.m. in Longview, Wash. at Story Field.

“We’re 0-0 now like everybody else. As a team we feel good going into the tournament,” Lyle said.
