Second Half Surge Carries Lady Titans over Green River
Lane Lady Titans suffered from shooting woes and sluggish play in the first half of Friday’s first round in the Pierce CC Tournament but Sophomore Megan Shields (Sherwood, OR.) helped ignite the Titans with 15 points, 9 rebounds and 7 steals in the 94-39 win over Green River CC.
Nicole Hannifan (Milwaukee, OR.) started quickly for the Titans scoring their first 6 points for a 6-0 lead before going to the bench with foul trouble. The quick start didn’t last as Lane shot only 28% from the field in the first half and only 12% from the three point line. However, their defense limited the Gators to only 18 points which carried the Titans to a 35-18 lead at the half.
The Titans came out of the locker room quickly correcting their shooting problems by getting easy transition baskets and scored at will in the half, scoring 59 points, and hitting 5-for-9 from the three point line. Lane pressured the Gators into 46 turnovers collecting 28 steals.
Renee Lucero (Stanwood, WA.) and Madison Moore (San Ramon, CA.) scored 11 points each, Hannifan added 10 points. At least 11 players scored at least 5 points for the Titans. Jordan Wilcox (Bend, OR.) had 8 points, Simone Thompson (Gardena, CA.) , Courtney Walchli (Hermiston, OR) and Tori Mahaffie (Eugene, OR.) had 7 points each. Kersey Wilcox (Bend, OR.) led the team in assists with 4.
Lane returns to action this afternoon at 5 p.m. against Skagit Valley College in the tournament semi-finals. The Titans (5-0) are currently ranked a unanimous # 1 in the NWAACC coaches poll and # 1 in the Johoward power rankings.
