SHS’s all-time leading girl’s scorer headed to play for Lane Titans
She is the all-time leading scorer for the Sunnyside High School Lady Grizzlies basketball program, having hit the mark of 1,279 points this past winter.
Jordan Rodriguez will be taking her aptitude for the sport to Eugene, Ore., where she plans to attend Lane Community College.
“I had other college opportunities, but felt the change of scenery would be good for me,” she said.
After two years at Lane Community College, playing for the Titans, Rodriguez plans to further her college career at a four-year university with the goal of earning a degree in physical education.
Officials at the college, said Rodriguez, kept in contact with her throughout her senior year, tracking her season and letting her know they were extremely hopeful she would choose to play for their women’s basketball program.
She was a member of the SHS varsity girls basketball team all four years of high school, averaging three assists her senior year. Her junior year, she and her teammates earned fourth-place honors at the 3A State basketball tournament. In the three games played at State, Rodriguez collected 36 points and 26 rebounds. She hit the 1,000-point mark during the quarter-final tilt at State her junior season.
“I didn’t enjoy basketball as much this year and I am hoping the new experience will help me with a fresh start,” said Rodriguez, who said she wants to rediscover her love of the game.
She said she will miss her parents and siblings most.
“My father has always been my coach,” noted Rodriguez.
But, she knows the future is ahead of her and Lane Community College is helping her reach for her dreams with a full-ride athletic scholarship.
“I will have to pay my living expenses and for my books,” Rodriguez said.
She said she hopes to find an apartment she can share with her new teammates.
In addition to being a standout on the basketball court, Rodriguez will graduate among the top academic achievers for the SHS class of 2015.
