For the second time in school history, Lane’s women’s soccer team has advanced to the semifinals of the Northwest Athletic Conference tournament.

The Titans defeated Shoreline 2-1 in a quarterfinal matchup at Lane Community College on Saturday afternoon to earn a trip to the tournament’s final four — the first since 2006.

“We have a group of sophomores who aren’t ready to be done playing, so it’s awesome that we get to live to play another day,” Lane coach Erica Jensen said. “We have such a good group of hardworking student-athletes and I’m so happy for them.”

Karlee Wilcox volleyed the ball into an empty net in the 71st minute to put the Titans up 2-0 and secure a trip to the next round.

“My heart dropped when I watched the ball go in. … I have never been so excited in my life,” Wilcox said. “I just knew from then on, since we had a second goal, that we were more likely to keep going.”

Wilcox’s goal was assisted by Taylor Boyer, who drew Shoreline keeper Melissa Schuetze away from goal and chipped the ball over her head to set up a wide-open Wilcox.

Boyer, who leads the Titans with 17 goals and seven assists this season, opened the scoring with a goal of her own in the 41st minute, and had four shots on goal in the first half.

“We could have had five goals in the first half. ... Credit to Shoreline’s keeper,” Jensen said. “We haven’t seen a keeper who makes those kind of saves, and she absolutely kept (the Dolphins) in the game.

“It’s the first time I’ve seen anybody shut down Taylor Boyer.”

Titans goalkeeper Erica Cogburn recorded seven saves, and surrendered the Dolphins’ only goal on a penalty kick by Shoreline forward Hayley Warren in stoppage time.

The Titans, who own a league record of 13-2-2 (15-2-2 overall) captured their first ever NWAC Southern Region championship this season, will play their semifinal match on Nov. 15 at the Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila, Wash. They will face the winner of today’s match between Peninsula and Treasure Valley.
