Titans snap skid with Laker sweep
Timely hitting and strong pitching push Lane back into the NWAACC South race
Alex Cornwell doubled home the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning to help Lane snap a four-game losing streak with a 4-2 victory over Southwestern Oregon Community College in the first game of an NWAACC baseball doubleheader on Tuesday at Titan Field.
Shaun Boehm followed with another double to drive in Cornwell with the final run, and Colben McGuire pitched a scoreless ninth for his fourth save.
Starter Nic Coffman went the first eight innings and allowed two earned runs on eight hits with six strikeouts to improve to 5-2.
Andrew Tracey and Daniel Copeland each drove in a run in the fourth to give Lane a 2-0 lead. The Lakers came back with two in the seventh on back-to-back RBI doubles by Dustin Jenkins and Jarrett Miller.
In the second game, Boehm was 2-for-2 with three RBIs and Coffman drove in two runs in a 7-3 victory over the Lakers to complete the sweep.
Corey Wynant also was 2-for-3 with an RBI as Jake Lessel, Zach Eyster and McGuire combined on a seven-inning five-hitter and struck out nine. Eyster (4-1), who pitched three innings of middle relief, picked up the win.
The Titans (19-17, 15-9 NWAACC South) visit region-leading Mount Hood (26-10, 19-5) on Saturday for a doubleheader.
