Lady Titans Crush Yaks for Crossover Title
Lane captured it's third pre-season championship title of the young season today, crushing the Yakima Valley Yaks 84-54. The Titans depth once again proved a factor in the championship game as they pressured Yakima into quick shots and turned those rebounds into quick scores. Lane had 30-16 lead with about eight minutes to go in the first half when the Yaks went on a seven point run to cut the lead to seven points. They turned the tables in last five minutes and outscored Yakima eight to two for a 38-25 halftime lead.
The Titans, an outstanding second half team this season, burst out of the blocks in the second half and increased the lead to twenty eight points with twelve minutes to go. Maintaining the lead, using clock and hitting timely shots proved to be the winning formula in the last ten minutes as they increased the lead and finished Yakima off. Lane aggressiveness led to thirty two free throw attempts of which they hit twenty five for 78% from the line.
All-Tournament selection Nicole Hannifan (Milwaukee, OR.) led the Titans in scoring with 15 pts, tournament MVP Megan Shields (Sherwood, OR.) had 12 pts, 4 rebounds and 4 blocks. Starting point guard Kersey Wilcox (Prineville, OR.) collected 12 pts, including going 8-for-10 from the free throw line. Last player in double figures was Danielle Schmidt (Hillsboro, OR.) with 10 pts. Starting guard Renee Lucero (Stanwood, WA.) was the rebounding leader with 11 boards while Tori Mahaffie (Eugene, OR.) collected 8 caroms.
MVP Megan Shields also became the Lane all-time career leader in blocked shots, her four for the game gave her 101 for her career, eclipsing Kristin Huff's record of 97.
The Titans (11-0) are idle for twelve days when they begin the Chemeketa Holiday tournament in Salem, OR. December 28th. Lane begins the tournament against Everett CC, a team they beat earlier this season in the Everett tournament.
