Titans Open Season With 110-88 Win Over Alumni
Lane women's basketball team opened their 2013-2014 season Sunday afternoon with a 110-88 win over a pesky Alumni team. The Titans broke the century mark with seven players in double figures including six freshman.
Erica Cogburn, a freshman from Thurston High led the Titan scorers with 22 points and 6 rebounds, including 2-for-2 from the three point line and 8-for-9 from the free throw line. The Titans shot 45% from the three point line making thirteen long range shots on the day. Sophomore Tori Mahaffie was next on the scoring list with 15 points as was freshman Shelby Snook from Roseburg High. Marikah Wright, freshman from Washington's Newport High, had 13 pts and a team leading 8 rebounds. Gabby Heehn, a freshman from Hermiston High knocked down four three's for 12 points, Jacia Jointer, freshman from Portland's Parkrose High had 11 points and Springfield's freshman Niki Duncan rounded out the double figure scorers with 10 points.
Sarah Whitfield, who finished her collegiate career at Division I Florida Gulf Coast University led all scorers with 34 points and a game high 9 rebounds. Other Alumni included in double figures were Kailee Short (Southern Oregon Univ.) with 16 points. Kourtney Parks (Seattle Univ.) finished out the double scorers with 13 pts.
The Alumni hung tough with Titans and held a four point lead with nine minutes to go in the first half. Titans fought back with full court pressure and built a seven point halftime lead at 46-39. The Titans fired out the block in the second half and built a double digit lead with 15 minutes to go in the game. The Titans continued to run and stretch the lead to until building a twenty point lead with two minutes to go.
The Titans continue their season next Thursday in a tournament at Everett Community College when they take on Bellevue College at 2:00pm.
