Lane Community College introduced two new fall sports programs on Saturday afternoon, and each of them found varying degrees of success in their respective debuts.
The Lane men’s soccer team and the Lane volleyball team each kicked off their 2016 campaigns with the Northwest Athletic Conference Fall Festival, held at the Willamalane Center in Springfield and Lane Community College.
The Titan men played the last soccer match of the day on its home turf and topped South Puget Sound 2-1 to start its season with a convincing win. Kyle Smith got Lane on the board with a goal in the 39th minute, and Frankie Martinez added another off an assist from Chris Daniel just before halftime.
The Titans dominated possession in the second half and surrendered just one shot on goal. That shot resulted in an 89th minute goal for South Puget Sound when Parker Lemas lobbed a ball over the head of Lane goalkeeper Kyle Carson from 15 yards out and into the back of the net.
“We’re still a little sloppy. It’s early,” Lane coach John Galas said. “Possession-wise, we were a little careless at times and defensively we got caught in a transition a bit. But other than that, I’m happy.”
